Alternative Fuel Stations Approach 10,000 in the U.S.

GasBuddy Blog -- A new report from the Energy Information Addministration (EIA) says that although gasoline remains, by far, the dominant transportation fuel, the use of alternative fuels currently in use is growing. But, the majority of that usage is by government and private fleets.

These fuels include: electricity, propane, higher ethanol-gasoline blends (E85), hydrogen and natural gas. Altogether there are now about 10,000 alternative fuel stations in the U.S. and about 160,000 gas stations nationwide.

The report notes, for instance, that bio-diesel fuels (which differ in the proportion of petroleum diesel and bio-based fuel) are used primarily in private and government fleets only, and of the 347 private access stations, nearly...

1 out of every 16 stations are selling alternative fuel(s)?

That's a lot higher than I would guess.

We still have the fragile electrical grid that is supposed to carry this extra capacity, correct? I see an electrical shortage coming; not considering any cap-and-trade regulation that would aggravate this issue.

Okay so not even 10% but we should buy all of these and park them so when more stations are built we can use them. I think not.

I can't afford the high cost of gasoline and then pay parking in downtown Columbus. By the time you have to fill your vehicle and then pay from $5 a day to $100 per month to park it is much cheaper to take the COTA bus to work. The only things lacking with COTA is consistency (they keep messing with the routes), reliability (they are often late or break down) and a good attitude towards the riders, and I don't mean from the drivers either but from the COTA front office people.

In my view this is good stuff. Hopefully alternatives of oil/gasoline will continue to be developeed and deployed. Competition tends to keep prices lower.

I hope they can finally pick one or two & stay with it. Too much $$'s in trying this, and trying that. We need to stop wasting tax payers money, get a grip on things, & then reduce the gas prices for the consumer. We've got to get the gas prices fixed now.

Switch the trucking industry over to CNG, and stabilize shipping costs without putting too much pressure on the use for heating.

I try to use biodiesel in my VW when I can find it. Normally, I purchase 100% biodiesel and do the mising myself by adding a few gallons when I do a fillup.

I don't think that private fleet fuel stations should be considered as an asset to the public or used to promote alternative energy sources. When I can drive to any local service station and buy my choice of fuels, like gasoline, diesel, fully charge my electric car, fill up with hydrogen, or top off my natural gas tank in less than 10 minutes will I think we have turned the corner and that alternative fuels are ready for prime time.
